Carl Demma was a pious Catholic who sold his liquor store to commission this statue of the Virgin Mary, constructed entirely of stainless steel, which looms 33 feet 8 inches above the ground and weighs more than 3 tons. Demma had dreamed of this since he was a ten-year-old. He chased that dream “through ill health, financial difficulties, the deaths of his two daughters, and the indifference of many who should have been his support” (ministryvalues.com). His wife Francine Demma told ministryvalues.com that Carl “wanted to leave something for Chicago. What better than our Blessed Mother?” In the end, one wonders how many bottles of booze it took to pay for the whole affair.
